聖書によると、神様は、ご自分のメッセージを人間に伝えるために、ユダヤ人を選ばれました。そして、ユダヤ人たちに、全世界の人々に神様のことを知らせる使命を与えられました。ところが、ユダヤ人たちは神様の考えを勘違いをして、自分たちは神様に選ばれた特別な民だと思うようになりました。他の人々に神様のことを伝えることを忘れてしまいました。
According to the Bible, God chose the Jews and gave them a mission of making God known to the people all over the world. However, the Jews misunderstood God’s thinking and came to think that they were a special people chosen by God, and they forgot to tell other people about God.
ユダヤ人の中でも、特に、パリサイ人と呼ばれた人々は、自分たちは神様の命令を一生懸命に守っていると思って傲慢になり、他の人々を軽蔑していました。彼らは、悪いことをする人々とは、いっさい関りを持たないようにしていました。そのような人々と一緒にいると、自分たちが汚れると思っていたからです。
Among the Jews, especially those who were called Pharisees, thought that they were diligently keeping God’s commands, became arrogant and despised other people. They had nothing to do with people who were leading a bad life. Because they thought they would be unclean when having fellowship with such people.
今日は、主イエスが語られた有名なたとえ話を取り上げますが、主イエスが、その話を語るようになったきっかけがありました。それが、今日読んだルカの福音書15章の1節に記されていますので、読んでみましょう。
Today, I would like to take up a famous parable told by the Lord Jesus, and there was a reason why the Lord Jesus began to tell that story. This is written in Luke 15:1, so let’s read it.
「さて、取税人や罪人たちがみな、話を聞こうとしてイエスの近くにやって来た。」取税人という人々が登場しますが、この人たちはユダヤ人の社会でもっとも嫌われていた人々でした。彼らはユダヤ人にとって、裏切り者でした。当時、イスラエルは外国人の国ローマ帝国によって支配されていました。取税人たちは、ローマ帝国にお金を払って、ユダヤ人たちから税金を集める権利をもらっていました。そして、ユダヤ人たちから税金を搾り取り、ローマ帝国から給料をもらっていました。
“Now the tax collectors and “sinners” were all gathering around to hear him. “
There are people called tax collectors, who were the most hated people in Jewish society. They were traitors to the Jews. At that time, Israel was ruled by the Roman Empire, a country of foreigners. Tax collectors paid money to the Roman Empire to get the right to collect taxes from the Jews. And they were extorting taxes from the Jews and receiving very good salaries from the Roman Empire.
取税人は同胞のユダヤ人を苦しめてローマ人からお金をもらっていたので、彼らはユダヤ人にとって許しがたい存在でした。そのため、取税人はユダヤ教の会堂に入ることを禁じられていましたし、ユダヤ人の裁判で証言することも許されていませんでした。彼らは、他のユダヤ人から、外国人よりも低い人間とみられていました。
The tax collectors harassed their fellow Jews and received money from the Romans, so they were unforgivable to the Jews. As a result, tax collectors were not allowed to enter Jewish synagogues, nor were they allowed to testify at Jewish trials. They were viewed by other Jews as inferior to foreigners.
また、罪人たちと呼ばれた人々もイエスに近づいて来ました。彼らは、不道徳な生き方をしていた人々、社会の迷惑と考えられていた人々でした。取税人たちも罪人たちも、ユダヤ人社会では最低の人間です。誰からも相手にされない人々でした。そんな彼らが、主イエスの噂を聞いて、主イエスの教えを聞いてみたいと思い、主イエスのところにやって来ました。主イエスは、彼らを喜んで受け入れました。
Also, those who were called sinners approached Jesus. They were people who lived immorally, people who were considered a nuisance to the society. Tax collectors and sinners are the worst people in Jewish society. They were people who no one cared about. They heard rumors about the Lord Jesus and wanted to hear his teachings, so they came to Jesus. Jesus welcomed them.
その様子を見ていたのがパリサイ人たちと律法学者たちでした。律法学者とは、旧約聖書を教える教師です。パリサイ人は熱心なユダヤ教徒です。彼らは、旧約聖書の命令をきちんと守り、自分は正しい人間だと思い込んでいました。彼らは、取税人や罪人と一緒にいると自分が宗教的に汚れると思い、決して彼らと交わりを持つことはありませんでした。
The Pharisees and the scribes were watching. A scribe is a teacher of the Old Testament. The Pharisees are devout Jews. They followed the Old Testament commandments and believed themselves to be righteous people. They never had fellowship with tax collectors and sinners, thinking they would be religiously unclean being with them.
一方、主イエスは、宗教の儀式に関する汚れを気にすることはなく、らい病人患者の体に手を置いて祈られたり、パリサイ人たちが大切にしていた、儀式の前に手足や体を洗うことを行われませんでした。特に、イエスは、パリサイ人たちが非常に嫌っていた取税人や罪人たちとは積極的に交わりを持ち、彼らに、神が彼らを愛していることを教えておられました。
On the other hand, Jesus did not care about the religious ceremonies. He laid his hands on the bodies of lepers and prayed for them. He did no religious washing. In particular, Jesus was actively in fellowship with tax collectors and sinners, whom the Pharisees hated so much, and Jesus taught them that God loved them.
パリサイ人と律法学者たちはその様子を見て言いました。「この人は罪人たちを受け入れて、一緒 に食事をしている」彼らは、旧約聖書を教える人々です。旧約聖書には、隣人を自分自身のように愛することが命令として教えられています。しかし、彼らは、取税人や罪人たちを軽蔑し、彼らと交わることは自分を汚すことだと考えていました。彼らは、イエスが取税人たちと交わる様子を見ながら、イエスを訴える口実を考えていました。彼らは、ユダヤ教の指導者でありながら、神様の心をまったく理解していませんでした。そこで、彼らの考えが間違っていることを指摘するために、主イエスは、このたとえ話を話されました。
The Pharisees and scribes saw this and said, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.” They are people who teach the Old Testament. The Old Testament commands us to love your neighbor as yourself. However, they despised tax collectors and sinners, and considered it unclean to associate with them. As they saw Jesus interacting with these people, they were looking for a pretext to accuse Jesus. Although they were Jewish leaders, they did not understand God’s thought at all. So, in order to point out their mistaken thinking, the Lord Jesus told this parable.
イエスは次のような話をされました。「あなたがたのうちのだれかが羊を百匹持っていて、そのうちの一匹をなくしたら、その人は九十九匹を野に残して、いなくなった一匹を見つけるまで捜し歩かないでしょうか。」イスラエルには多くの羊がおり、羊の世話をする羊飼いたちが大勢いました。羊はとても弱い動物で、また、道に迷いやすい動物なので、羊には羊の世話をする羊飼いが必要でした。羊が迷子になることはよくあることですが、その責任は羊にあります。迷子になった羊は、羊飼いの声をちゃんと聞いていなければなりませんでした。しかし、それでも、羊飼いは必死になって、いなくなった羊をさがします。
Jesus said “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? “ Sheep need a shepherd to take care of them because sheep are very weak animals and easily get lost. Sheep often get lost because they don’t pay good attention to the sheperd’s leading, so getting lost is their fault. The lost sheep had to listen carefully to the shepherd’s voice. But still, the shepherd desperately tries to find his lost sheep.
羊飼いの多くは、羊のオーナーに雇われた貧しい人たちでした。羊飼いが世話をしている羊が一匹いなくなった場合、その羊が獣に殺されたという証拠がないと、羊飼いはその羊の代金を羊のオーナーに支払わなければなりませんでした。そのため、羊飼いは99匹を置いて、必死になって1匹の羊をさがしに出かけます。
In Jesus days, the shepherds were poor people employed by sheep owners. If a shepherd lost a sheep in his care, and there was no evidence that the sheep had been killed by a beast, the shepherd had to pay for the sheep. So the shepherd leaves the 99 and goes out in desperation to find the one lost sheep.
私たちは、羊飼いが99匹を残して1匹をさがしに行くのは間違っていると思うかもしれませんが、羊飼いは99匹は囲いの中に入れておけば安全であることを知っているのです。一方、迷子になった羊は大きな危険にさらされています。羊飼いにとっては、1匹1匹がとても大切であり、それぞれに名前をつけて呼んでいます。羊飼いは、どの1匹がいなくなったのか分かっています。羊飼いは、一匹の羊が見つかるまで、さがし続けます。
We may think it is wrong for a shepherd to leave the 99 and go find one, but the shepherd knows that the 99 are safe as long as they are in the sheepfold. But the lost sheep, on the other hand, is in great danger. For a shepherd, each animal is very important and each one is given a name. The shepherd knows which one is missing. The shepherd keeps searching until he finds the sheep.
このたとえ話の羊飼いは神様を表しています。聖書によれば、私たちは神様によって造られました。私たちは、神様とともに生きる時に、神様から与えられた価値と能力を最大限に発揮して生きることができるのですが、私たち人間は、神様から離れて、自分勝手な生き方をするようになりました。その姿は、迷子になった羊に似ています。羊は、羊飼いといっしょにいる限り安全です。
The shepherd in this parable represents God. According to the Bible, we were created by God. The Bible teaches that when we live together with God, we are the safest and we are able to live making the most of all that we are given from God. But we humans have become separated from God and have become selfish. We are like this lost sheep. Sheep are safe as long as they are with the shepherd.
しかし、羊が羊飼いを離れてしまうと、たちまち大きな危険に直面します。羊は、自分で囲いの中に戻ることができません。獣に襲われた時、自分を守る力も武器もありません。それと同じように、人間も、神様を信じて、神様とともに生きる時が一番安全なのですが、神様から離れると、様々な誘惑を受け、自分の欲望に流されて、間違った方向に進んで行ってしまいます。
But when the sheep leave the shepherd, they quickly face great danger. Sheep cannot return to the sheepfold on their own. When attacked by beasts, they have no strength or weapons to defend themselves. In the same way, humans are safest when they believe in God and live with God.When we are separated from God, we are subject to various temptations, and we are led in the wrong direction by our own desires.
自己中心の心を持っていると、いつも自分が一番という基準で物事を判断するために、正しい判断ができません。誰もが自分が一番と思っていますから、当然、人と人とがぶつかることが多くなります。神から離れて生きること、これが人間にとって最も大きな問題であり、それを聖書は罪と呼んでいます。
If you have a self-centered mind, you will not be able to make correct judgments because you will always judge things based on the criteria that you are the best. Everyone think in the same way so naturally, people often clash with each other. Living apart from God is the greatest problem of man, and the Bible calls it sin.
しかし、神様は、自分から離れて行った人間を、見捨てることなく、いつも探し求めておられます。羊飼いが、迷子になった一匹を必死になってさがしたように、神様は私たち一人一人を探し求めておられます。イエス・キリストは人となった神ですが、なぜ、いっさいの制限を持たない無限の神様が人間のような小さな姿になって、わざわざ、この世に来られたのでしょうか。それは、神様から離れて生きている私たちを探し出して、私たちを本来いるべき場所、もっとも安全な場所、神様のおられるところへ連れ戻すためなのです。
However, God is always looking for people who have left him without abandoning them. God is searching for each one of us, just as a shepherd desperately searches for a lost sheep. Jesus Christ is God incarnate, but why did an infinite, limitless God come to this world in a small, human-like form? It is to seek out those of us who are living apart from God and bring us back to where we belong, the safest place, where God is.
羊飼いは、いなくなった羊を見つけた時、とても喜びました。大切な一匹の羊が見つかったので、うれしくてうれしくて、肩に抱きあげて、羊の囲いへと連れて行きます。そして、嬉しさのあまり、
家に戻ると、友だちや近所の人々を呼び集めて、「一緒に喜んでください。いなくなった羊を見つけました。」と言うでしょう。
The shepherd was very happy when he found the lost sheep. He is so happy because his precious one has been found safe. So he picks him up on his shoulders and takes him to the sheepfold. And with great joy, when he returns home, he will call his friends and neighbors together and say, “Rejoice with me. I have found my lost sheep.”
わたしも、よくいろいろなものをなくします。そのため、よく必死になってなくなったものをさがしています。大切なものほど、見つかった時は嬉しくて「あったー」と叫んでしまいます。なくったらいけないものが見つかったときの嬉しさは本当に大きいです。
I also lose a lot of things. Therefore, I often frantically search for things that have disappeared. The more important something is, the more happy I am when I find it, so I often cry out, “There it is!” When you find something precious, the joy is really great.
それと同じように、7節に記されているように、一人の罪人が悔い改めるなら、悔い改める必要のない99人の正しい人のためよりも、大きな喜びが天にあるのです。今日、皆さんに知っていただきたいことは、聖書の神様は、どこまでも一人の人をさがし求める神であることです。それほど、神様にとって、一人一人の魂の価値は大きいのです。そして、神から離れている人々が、神のもとに戻ることを決心するとき、天国では、大きなパーティが開かれるぐらいに、神様はそのことを喜ばれるのです。
In the same way, as verse 7 says, there is greater joy in heaven for one sinner who repents than for 99 righteous people who do not need to repent. What I want you to know today is that the God of the Bible is a God who endlessly seeks out just one person. To God, the value of each soul is great. And when people who are separated from God decide to return to God, God is so pleased with it that a big party is held in heaven.
実は、パリサイ人も律法学者も、神から離れて生きていたのですが、彼らはそのことに気が付いていませんでした。彼らも、取税人や罪人と同じように主イエスのところに来て、自分が神から離れて生きていたことを悔い改めなければならなったのですが、彼らにはその考えはありませんでした。取税人や罪人たちは、罪赦されて神の子として受け入れられましたが、パリサイ人と律法学者は受け入れられませんでした。
In fact, both the Pharisees and the scribes were also living apart from God, but they didn’t realize it. They also , like the tax collectors and sinners, should have come to Jesus and repented for living apart from God, but they had no intention to do that. The tax collectors and sinners were pardoned and accepted as children of God, but the Pharisees and scribes were not.
神様は、ひとりでも多くの人が、自分のところへ戻ってくることを願って、今も、一人一人をさがし求めておられます。今もあなたをさがし求めておられる神様がおられることをぜひ覚えておいてください。
God is still looking for one person, hoping that as many people as possible will come back to him. Please remember that God is still looking for you now.
